The i7 Protection, billed as the world’s first ever protection saloon with an all-electric drive system, and 7 Series Protection, based on the standard 7 Series model, have been revealed by BMW.
The Protection is designed to offer at-risk individuals protection from attacks with firearms and explosives and is classified as offering class VR9 protection based on the official test criteria of Germany’s Association of Test Laboratories for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions (VPAM).
The certification is based on the third edition of the guidelines for Bullet Resistant Vehicleswith regard to ballistic resistance, and the guidelines for Explosive Resistant Vehicles and PAS 300 with regard to blast resistance. The glass fitted to the models also meets VPAM 10 classification, denoting the highest level of protection for civilian protection vehicles.
BMW’s new Protection Core – which sees the entire supporting structure of the saloon’s body manufactured from armor steel – ensures the highest level of protection for occupants. It forms a self-supporting protective cell, which is then combined with protection-spec doors, armoring for the underbody and roof, and safety glass.
An extensive range of driver assistance systems has been fitted, with componentry “focused on supporting professional chauffeurs with information and warnings”. Sensors and cameras developed for the latest 7 Series range are also fitted to provide a detailed view of the vehicle’s surroundings.
For additional comfort when on the move, multifunction seats, BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated seats come as standard. A massage function can also be selected as an optional extra. Additionally, a cool box is integrated between the rear seats and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System comes as standard.
The BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection are equipped with the latest BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5, complete with the BMW Curved Display. An intercom system also comes and standard, enabling occupants to communicate with people on the outside without having to open doors or windows.
The i7 Protection and 7 Series Protection can also be equipped with a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights and radio transceivers among other components.
The BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, Germany. The vehicles will debut to the public at IAA Mobility 2023, ahead of deliveries starting in December 2023.Â
