Hyundai Mobis has produced what is stated to be the world’s first rollable display for use in automotive applications. It’s compact by design, and users can select how much of the display they wish to view depending on the situation.
The display features a screen that rolls up and down when presenting driving information such as navigation. When the vehicle’s engine or power is turned off, the screen disappears. Users can roll the screen down and use just one-third of the display to show the minimum amount of driving information. When navigation is needed, the screen can be scaled up to two-thirds, or switched to full screen mode to deliver a 16:9 aspect ratio for viewing videos when parked or charging.
Hyundai Mobis plans to introduce the rollable display into the automotive market and is targeting luxury vehicle manufacturers in North America and Europe. The technology, which has already been used in smartphone and TV applications, has proved reliable and durable.
The rollable display will be installed where conventional navigation systems currently are. Due to its compact design – it requires only 12cm of depth – the smart solution takes up a small amount of space, delivering more design freedom to OEMs. Additionally, in purpose-built vehicles, the screen can be installed on the ceiling between the front and the back seats or sideways next to the seats.
Hyundai Mobis’s rollable display is produced in either a QHD resolution or higher, and the company can produce displays that are over 30in across.
“We are looking forward to becoming a game changer in the automotive display market with our differentiated technology,” said Han Young-hoon, vice president, head of electronics convenience and control (EC), Hyundai Mobis. “We will pioneer the global market by driving the trend of new infotainment technologies.”
