Motability Operations and Callum have collaborated on the development of a new electric vehicle concept called eVITA, to address the needs of wheelchair users transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs). The partnership aims to showcase the possibilities of inclusive design and engineering in the automotive industry.
Recognizing the potential exclusion of over 34,000 users of wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) in the UK during the EV transition, Motability Operations emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure inclusivity in vehicle design and manufacturing.
eVITA’s functionality has been carefully crafted in consultation with customers and wheelchair users to address common concerns and needs. Insights were gathered via customer clinics to inform the design process, ensuring that the final product meets the diverse requirements of passenger WAV users.
“Today, electric vehicles are not offering the functionality and flexibility required by WAV users,” said Ian Callum, design director at Callum. “OEMs, their designers and engineers must plan ahead and embrace inclusive design principles to ensure that WAV users and disabled people are not forgotten in the transition to EVs.
“With eVITA, form and functionality have been developed in parallel, resulting in a well-considered, user-friendly EV that is both practical and stylish.”
Critical to eVITA’s design is the placement of the battery, which allows for a completely flat floor between the tailgate and front row, facilitating smooth wheelchair access. This design feature also improves visibility and seating position for wheelchair users, fostering a sense of connection with other passengers.
eVITA incorporates two charging ports for convenience, along with a 50kWh battery providing an anticipated range of around 320km. Innovative lighting solutions, including LED puddle lights, enhance safety and accessibility by alerting other motorists to the space required for ramp extension.
The interior of eVITA prioritizes functionality and versatility, with features such as a flip seat in the rear for flexible seating arrangements. A modular ‘utility bar’ provides easy access to infotainment and climate control features, ensuring independence and convenience for occupants.
Callum managing director David Fairbairn added, “The Callum team is incredibly proud to reveal eVITA and to work with Motability Operations on such an important project that has the potential to positively impact so many lives, supporting Motability Scheme customers with freedom and enjoyment of travel as society transitions to electric.”
Motability Operations CEO Andrew Miller explained, “Collaboration is key to making the EV transition a success for wheelchair users; we need our partners, manufacturers and policymakers to believe in better and to work alongside us to take action. eVITA shows what can be done.”
