Tobias Sühlmann has been appointed chief design officer at Mclaren Automotive, effective September 2023.
In this position, Sühlmann will be based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK, and will be responsible for all aspects of brand design, including leading a design team which focuses on interior and exterior styling, colors and materials and future concept vehicles. Sühlmann will also work directly with customers to personalize all aspects of their vehicles before they’re hand-built at the OEM’s nearby production center.
Sühlmann previously worked for McLaren as the lead designer for Special Projects, where he oversaw the design of the track-only McLaren Solus GT single-seat hypercar. In addition to McLaren, over the past two decades he has worked for several luxury OEMs including Bentley, Bugatti and Aston Martin.
In his new position, Sühlmann will report directly to Michael Leiters, McLaren Automotive’s chief executive officer.
“We are delighted to welcome Tobias to the McLaren team,” said Leiters. “He is a highly experienced automotive designer with an existing understanding of McLaren having previously worked on our ground-breaking Solus GT project. Tobias will play a leading role in developing McLaren’s new design language across our developing product portfolio as part of our Future of Performance business strategy.”
