The interior of the next-generation Mercedes E-Class has been unveiled, complete with the OEM’s new Superscreen, enhanced voice recognition, integrated TikTok and Zoom applications, and smart lighting.
Taking center stage within the 2024 E-Class is the Superscreen, which consists of a large standard central touchscreen with a second display in front of the passenger. Several slim air vents curve around the top of the screen, with a row of touch-capacitive buttons situated below the center display.
Similar to other new models from the German OEM, the E-Class features a large center console and ambient lighting. An array of new leather color and wood trim options are available, such as open-pore wood with a backlit Mercedes star pattern.
The Superscreen and its MBUX infotainment system are powered by a central computer with a single processor, enabling faster data streams and advanced updates. A 5G connection comes with the Entertainment Plus package.
Delivering enhanced audio as standard is a 17-speaker Burmester 4D surround sound system with sound transducers located in the front seats. Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos from Apple Music also features.
Passengers can stream video content on the screen on their side of the vehicle, and depending on regulations in their respective country, infotainment may be enabled on the Superscreen further down the line when the OEM’s Level 3 Drive Pilot system is activated.
A selfie and video camera is situated on either the gauge display or atop the dashboard, and upon the vehicle’s launch, several third-party apps will be available that don’t require smartphone mirroring through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. These will enable the use of Zoom and Webex, the Vivaldi web browser and TikTok.
To ensure drivers aren’t distracted by the passenger’s screen, the touch function of the screen is only activated if the passenger seat sensors detect an occupant. If no passenger is detected, then the screen acts as a screensaver. Furthermore, dual light control technology prevents dynamic content on the passenger screen from being viewed by the driver. For additional safety, the selfie camera tracks the driver’s eye movements to ascertain how long the driver looks at the passenger side and screen, automatically dimming the passenger screen to make it less distracting but still visible to the passenger.
Additional details of the 2024 Mercedes E-Class are expected to be released in the coming months.
