As part of the expansion of its use of artificial intelligence, Mercedes-Benz has announced it is integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT with its MBUX Voice Assistant to improve the driving experience with an even more intuitive voice control.
From June 16, ChatGPT, which is built on a sophisticated neural network, is being offered to 900,000 vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system as part of an optional three-month beta program for customers in the USA. The ChatGPT beta program is delivered to vehicles via an over-the-air update and will be integrated through the Azure OpenAI Service.
By leveraging a large language model to significantly enhance natural language understanding, ChatGPT will bolster Mercedes-Benz’s existing voice control capabilities. As a result, customers will benefit from a voice assistant that can accept natural voice commands and conversations. In the near future, users will be provided with more comprehensive answers, all while staying focused on the road.
For additional security, Mercedes-Benz will tap into OpenAI’s large-scale generative AI models combined with the enterprise-grade security, privacy and reliability capabilities of Azure. Mercedes-Benz will retain control of the IT processes in the background, while voice command data is collected and stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud where it is subsequently anonymized and analyzed.
“The integration of ChatGPT with Microsoft in our controlled cloud environment is a milestone on our way to making our cars the center of our customers’ digital lives,” explained Markus Schäfer, member of the board of management, Mercedes-Benz Group, chief technology officer, development and procurement.
“Our beta program boosts the existing Hey Mercedes functions such as navigation queries, weather requests and others with the capabilities of ChatGPT. This way, we aim to support conversations with natural dialogs and follow-up questions. Our customers can always rely on us to ensure the best possible protection of their data privacy. Everything is under one big goal: Redefining the relationship with your Mercedes.”
