To increase its support for automotive interiors, BIG Yarns – part of the Beaulieu International Group – has completed its first industrial production runs of virgin polyester BCF yarns, at its plant in Belgium.
BIG offers solution-dyed BCF carpet yarns for the automotive sector, utilizing nylon (PA6), polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET), including the sustainability-focused Eqo range of PA6 yarns.
These new yarns, alongside the company’s existing polyamide PA6 line, cater to the expanding market for PET in automotive interiors. Polyester allows OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to develop products that consider eco design from the outset, including mono-polymer carpets and flooring that are 100% recyclable at end of life (EOL).
According to BIG, the new PET BCF yarns offer high performance for automotive carpets, including abrasion and stain resistance and durability, passing automotive tests including the Taber test for abrasion performance, compressibility and recovery ability, light fastness in automotive and VOCs (fogging).
The yarns can be color solution dyed and have a dTex between 1,300-1,500, 81 filaments; they are ideal for mats with weights of between 400 and 800gsm. The yarns for molded carpets have a dTex of 1,200, 144 filaments for carpet weights of 380gsm.
“As the industry continues its transition toward circularity, making the right material choice is crucial from the outset to ensure the best-possible eco design and recyclability,” said Glenn Hyzak, BIG’s global sales director for yarns.
