Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the interior of its seventh-generation Transporter, featuring a modernized version of the previous layout. According to Albert Kirzinger, chief designer at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the new Transporter combines form and function, updating the successful design of the T6.1 for today’s needs.
“The high-quality interior of our new Transporter generation consistently combines well-thought-out features, hard-wearing materials and stylish design elements. We have taken this harmony to new heights with the new Transporter, and designed an interior that transposes the layout of the successful T6.1 into modern times,” said Kirzinger.
The revamped interior includes a digital cockpit with enhanced usability through the integration of physical controls, or hardkeys, to complement the wide range of digital functions. This design, according to VW, ensures that the Transporter remains a practical tool with straightforward operation and an efficient workspace.
The interior features high-quality materials, thoughtful design elements and numerous power interfaces, including USB-A, USB-C, 12V and optional 230V sockets. This array of charging points ensures that various electrical devices, from laptops to power tools, can be used efficiently within the vehicle.
The new Transporter is equipped with a starter button for the Keyless Start system, 12in digital instruments and a 13in infotainment display. The automatic transmission’s steering column selector lever, available as standard or optional, creates more legroom by relocating the traditional gear lever. The manual gearbox’s gear lever remains in the center console. The multifunction steering wheel includes clearly arranged buttons and the infotainment system volume can be adjusted via the steering wheel or a rotary knob. The handbrake lever has also been replaced by a switch for the parking brake, freeing up space in the footwell.
Practical features include large cup holders, additional stowage compartments in the dash panel, and a high dash panel and seating position.
The vehicle also has a load compartment ranging from 5.8 to 9.0m³, accommodating up to three Euro pallets, depending on the wheelbase and roof version. Diesel versions feature a 230V socket on the driver’s seat frame, while electric and plug-in hybrid models can include additional sockets with a total output of 2,300W, ensuring suitable power sources for nearly any device.
Kirzinger added, “Our new Transporter has a visually harmonious cockpit landscape. What’s worth noting here is that we have purposely supplemented or combined the wide range of digital functions with physical controls – in the form of easy-to-use hardkeys. This is because the Transporter is a tool, a vehicle for professionals. They need everything to be straightforward to use so that they can work efficiently.
“T6.1 drivers who are switching to the new version will need just a few minutes to get to grips with operating their new vehicle. But that’s not all: our new version is even easier to operate, which is exactly what we were aiming for.”
